This course is a combined MA colloquium and lecture series with a focus on topics related to Profile 4 of the Master in Sociology programme. The course particularly addresses MA students in their last year and graduates who intend to pursue doctoral studies. It is also open to early doctoral candidates. It invites students to present and discuss their own projects such as MA thesis, student research projects (e.g. Lehrforschung), PhD proposals and the like and to learn about the work of established researchers.
Project discussions (every second week) will be combined with a lecture series (every other week) that will bring together leading scholars of migration, transnationalization and citizenship studies. It is the aim of the course to make MA students familiar with more advanced academic work and allow them to reflect on their own projects.
The lecture series deals with issues around changing concepts and empirical realities of “Citizenship in the Age of Transnationalization”. It thus addresses central aspects relevant to Profile 4 of the Master in Sociology programme. In times of increased globalization, international migration and transnationalization of the social world, the established relation between states and their populations, and among citizens, members and non-members are changing fundamentally. This has given way to a broad discussion and new concepts of citizenship, membership and community.
At the same time, the course’s theme touches upon a broader range of topic and is open to students’ interest in the fields of globalization, world society, development, migration, transnationalization, and ethnicity.
