The course offers an insight into current approaches and debates about the change in both theory and practical workings of sovereignty, power, and governance on the national, regional, and global level. In so doing, we will focus on some basic notions of the political and confront these concepts with critical theoretical approaches. The course follows a threefold aim: First, traditional understandings of the basic concepts of sovereignty, liberty, power, law, and government will be presented and discussed. Second, current approaches and reinterpretations of these basic concepts of the political will be considered, focussing (inter alia) on debates within the “governmentality studies”. Third, in reference to the theoretical findings, we will discuss current empirical phenomena, in which the changed workings of politics under the present conditions of trans-, inter-, and denationalisation becomes apparent.
Literature and readings will be announced in the first course session.
