230512 Methods and Media: Visual Literacy and Contemporary Approaches to Language Teaching (S) (SoSe 2019)

Students who will one day be teaching in secondary school will be expected to give presentations in largish groups on the methods we will be focussing on. outlining the theoretical and methodological underpinnings of the methods, but the core of each presentation will be a microteaching sequence in which you demonstrate how the respective methods might be put into operation. Ideally, your microteaching tasks and activities should include visual materials as far as possible. Students who are planning to teach at primary school will be expected to give a presentation on using visual and other media in the primary school (in one or two groups). Again, this should centre on engaging and effective microteaching activities in which the affordances of the media are demonstrated..

Teilnahmevoraussetzungen, notwendige Vorkenntnisse

In this seminar, we will focus on contemporary communicative language teaching methods such as TBLT, CLL, CLIL and the Lexical Approach and also examine insights from theory and research on how to use visual material effectively to support language learning and teaching. We will also explore practical implementations of visual materials in a wide range of language learning purposes in a variety of different EFL contexts. This will include creating our own materials as well: don't worry, there will be a highly interactive and entertaining workshop that will prove to you that anyone can draw! This seminar is for students planning to teach at both primary and secondary school, Years 5 to 12/13 (YES, you CAN use pictures in the Oberstufe!)

Participants will be expected to contribute in various ways, such as presenting brief overviews of language teaching methods, analysing and/or creating materials and giving short presentations on their findings or creations: work will be geared to the kinds of materials they will be using at the level(s) they are planning to teach at in future.
