“What happened to the truth is not recorded.” – Julian Barnes, Flaubert's Parrot, p. 134
In this seminar, we are going to analyse contemporary British literary and cultural products as examples of postmodern fiction. We will discuss what postmodernism is, how it relates to modernism and poststructuralism, and why it features prominently in recent discussions of fake news and alternative facts. By discussing its historical development as well as the basic theoretical approaches to postmodernism we are going to explore its link to irony, black humour, parody, and playfulness.
