300201 The youth Out-Migration and Family Affairs: A Case of Nepal (S) (SoSe 2019)

This course is largely concerned with Nepal’s youth out-migration and changing family affairs. The objective of this course will be to familiarize the students with various aspects of increasing youth out-migration from developing countries like Nepal and consequences the society is facing particularly on the family matters. Historical overview of meaning of migration in Nepal, emic Basai Sarai (leave one's own place in order to settle permanently in another) Vs. Etic Migration, new development discourse and its impact in increasing aspiration of migration, contested characteristics of a ‘family’ and ‘community’ as an impact of youth out-migration, changing social structure along with migration and state Response, etc. will be the major contents to discuss during the tutorial. Traditional saying of a society that was “Uttam kheti,madhyam vyapaar,nikristha naukri (meaning among the professions, agriculture is the best, business is in the middle and service the least)", its reversed version and the major consequences of such reversal will be taken into consideration in the discussion.
