This course has been cancelled!

Contents, comment

In this class we will look at different aspects of orthography. We will, of course, start by taking a look at historical spelling systems and from there move to our area of interest, English spelling. Here we will deal with the standardization of spelling, nonce spelling, national spelling, (attempst at ) spelling reforms, dialect spelling, transliteration, and - if time permits - spelling in modern media (Internet, blogs, email, twitter, text messages). In addition we'll be looking at English lexis.
