Gesellschaftsgeschichte bezeichnet das Programm einer "historischen Sozialwissenschaft", die Geschichte von Gesamtgesellschaften zu betrachten. Sie ist seit den späten 1960erJahren ein Schlüsselbegriff der Theorie- und Methodendiskussion geworden. In der Veranstaltung werden die Denktraditionen, Entwicklung und Tendenzen der Gesellschaftsgeschichte als historiographisches Reformprogramm ebenso erörtert wie auch die neuen Theorieangebote, die für eine Erweiterung und Weiterentwicklung ihrer konzeptionellen Grundlage plädieren.
Einige Sitzungen werden in Kooperation mit auswärtigen Historikern durchgeführt.
