This course will give students an introduction to trans*gender studies – tracing the emergence of transgender as subject and object of study. A special focus will be placed on issues of trans* narrative, embodiment, and experience. As such, we will be reading autobiographical writing alongside sociological, philosophical, medical, literary, political science, and other disciplinary analyses. These multi-disciplinary scholarly materials will help us explore some of the key questions and debates within this young scientific field. What is at stake epistemologically, institutionally, culturally, politically, methodologically, etc. in trans* studies?
This course is aimed at master’s-level students with some prior knowledge in gender studies. Course instruction is in English.
