Die Städte in der Frühen Neuzeit bedienten sich einer ausgedehnten Schriftlichkeit bei allen Aspekten des Lebens innner- und außerhalb der Gemeinde. Erst um 1500 wechseln manche städtischen Schreibstuben zu überregionalen Schreibnormen (etwa nach dem Vorbild der sächsischen oder Wiener Kanzlei). Bis dahin verwendet jede Stadt eine Rechtschreibung, die sich aus dem vor Ort gesprochenen Dialekt und regionalen Einflüssen gebildet und weiterentwickelt hat. Es gibt daher in den deutschsprachigen Gebieten der Frühen Neuzeit einen diachronen Wandel als auch synchron nebeneinander existierende Rechtschreibsysteme, die relativ beharrlich eigene Normen bewahren. Zu studieren ist dies an einem Corpus von städtischen Urkunden um 1450 aus Kärnten, der Steiermark und vom Niederrhein. Anhand des Grundwortschatzes und der regional wie lokal vorherrschenden Schreibungen können unverwechselbare Profile für jede Stadt ermittelt werden.
