230838 English for Sociologists (level B2+/C1) (S) (WiSe 2009/2010)

This course is designed for students of sociology on focuses on reading and writing. Using a mix of topical reading materials from different sources (academic journals, English textbooks for sociology, Internet texts), students will train a set of reading and lexical strategies (see below) to give them a better grasp on the very difficult texts they have to read. Reading strategies include:

• strategies for quick reading (skimming scanning)
• identifying the text structure/skeletizing a text
• identify conventional patterns of academic articles
• identifying viewpoints, separating fact from opinion
• reading for research: evaluating sources according to relevance

Lexical strategies include:

• dealing with unfamiliar words
• collocation and connotation
• building up a word bank of relevant terms of art

Writing topics include: stylistic conventions in academic writing and how to write academic articles and abstracts
