230832 Readings in Sociology (level B2) (S) (WiSe 2009/2010)

Contents, comment

This course is designed to help students of Sociology at the B2 level deal with their coursework in academic reading. Using text material on sociological topics from textbooks, academic journals or the Internet, the course will train the skills listed below. At the end of the course, students should be able to handle academic articles of average difficulty with confidence.

  • Techniques for quick reading (skimming, scanning)
  • Identifying the text structure (‘skeletizing’ a text)
  • Reading for research (choosing the best source, comparing viewpoints and forms of argument)
  • Excerpting a text effectively
  • Essential lexical strategies for reading (dealing with unfamiliar words, collocation and connotation, choosing keywords)
  • Putting together a bibliography
