This course is designed to help students of Sociology at the B1+ level deal with their coursework in academic reading. Using text material from the Internet (e.g. PBS, websites of professional or academic institutions) and textbooks, the course will train the skills listed below. Towards the end of the course, easy academic articles will be covered.
• Techniques for quick reading (skimming, scanning)
• Identifying the text structure (‘skeletizing’ a text)
• Comparing viewpoints in a text
• Excerpting a text effectively
• Essential lexical strategies for reading (dealing with unfamiliar words, building up an academic vocabulary)
• Putting together a bibliography
Successful completion of another B2+-rated course or C-Test of the Language Center (please see http://www.uni-bielefeld.de/fachsprachenzentrum/tests.html for dates and details)
