Allgemeine Didaktik kann auf eine lange Tradition zurückblicken. Als Handlungswissenschaft für Studierende der Lehrämter, für Referendare und für praktizierende Lehrkräfte ist sie an Hochschulen und Universitäten etabliert. Allgemeine Didaktik steht jedoch insofern vor großen Herausforderungen als ungeklärt ist, ob die Perspektiven der Unterrichtsforschung, der Fachdidaktiken oder der Lehr-Lern-Forschung künftig wegweisend sein werden. Inwieweit ist Allgemeine Didaktik in der Lage, diesen Ansätzen zu begegnen, sie also z. B. teilweise in sich absorbierend aufzunehmen bzw. umgekehrt diese Herausforderungen für ihre eigene produktive Weiterentwicklung zu nutzen? Bei der Erörterung dieser Fragen werden im Seminar auch die Entwicklungsgeschichte der allgemein-didaktischen Theorien und die Denkansätze im deutschsprachigen Raum mit berücksichtigt.
