„Empfindsamkeit“ ist eine moralische, psychosoziale und literarische Strömung innerhalb der Epoche der Aufklärung (in Deutschland etwa zwischen 1740-80). In der literarischen Empfindsamkeit verbinden sich Tendenzen der Aufklärung mit einer ästhetischen Gefühlskultur. Mitleid, Rührung, Wissen über Affekte und Praktiken der Selbstbeobachtung, Schwärmerei und Freundschaftskult prägen Brief- und Reiseroman, Tagebuch, Autobiographie, Drama, Idylle und Lyrik.
Das Seminar führt in die Literatur der Empfindsamkeit ein. Dabei soll u. a. nach dem Verhältnis von Empfindsamkeit und Aufklärung, nach dem Einfluss der pietistischen Frömmigkeitspraxis sowie nach der wirkungsästhetischen Bedeutung der Empfindsamkeit gefragt werden. Es werden Texte von Klopstock, Voß, Gellert, Hölty und Claudius behandelt.
