230599 Teaching Specific Domains of English Language Competence (GymGes) (S) (WiSe 2009/2010)

Contents, comment

This course will be based on the schoolbooks for Gymnasium/Gesamtschule available in the Dauersemesterapparat in the library. Students will be asked to plan and demonstrate specific lessons based on the material in the schoolboooks. Among the items we will focus on will be grammar teaching, vocabulary teaching, fluency practice, how to use the texts in the schoolbooks, how to use the supplementary materials supplied, especially recorded material. Students will also be encouraged to compare the approaches of different textbooks to teaching specific items.

We will start with lessons for the fifth class and as the semester progresses move on to the higher grades (up to the tenth class). In particular we will be exploring ways of introducing material

  • relating material to the interests and experience of the learners
  • modifying and/or supplementing the course-book material
  • achieving transitions between teaching stages,
  • linking new material to previously learned material
  • providing scaffolding for learners
  • exploiting both inductive and deductive approaches to learning
  • encouraging the development of learner autonomy
  • creating opportunities for negotiation of meaning
  • creating opportunities for individualised learning
  • linking the schoolbook material to authentic material

Before the course begins, students should take some time to make themselves familiar with the schoolbooks available in the Dauersemesterapparat in the library.
