In this course we will trace the notion(s) and the development of Standard English from the 15th century to the present day. This will include the identification of the various standardisation processes in the history of English and the study of the development of English from a local to a global language.
We will also look at the implications this development has on the teaching of English both as a first and as a foreign language. We will therefore consider different approaches to the topic and deal with historical, descriptive, socio-linguistic, and also ideological perspectives and concepts.
The reader with all the required readings will be provided and made available well before start of term (see above).
