This course offers a comprehensive assessment of the idea of citizenship from a cosmopolitanism perspective. At the center of the seminar is the question of what a revised and critical concept of cosmopolitanism means for membership on various levels, that is, citizenship on local, national and world scales. First, we discuss concepts and meanings of citizenship in historical perspective over the past 200 years. Second, we distinguish cosmopolitanism from related concepts such as transnationalism and globalization. Third, we explore what a cosmopolitan concept of citizenship may mean, using examples such as European Union citizenship, national citizenship, and dual citizenship. We also apply the concept of citizenship to substantive areas of research, such as global social inequalities,.and migration & development This effort also raises the question of how cosmopolitan analysis can take into account non-western expressions of cosmopolitanism.
