230171 Methods and Media: Visual Literacy and Contemporary Approaches to Language Teaching (S) (SoSe 2018)

In this seminar, we will focus on contemporary communicative language teaching methods such as TBLT, CLL, CLIL and the Lexical Approach and also examine insights from theory and research on how to use visual material effectively to support language learning and teaching. Subsequently, we will explore practical implementations of visual materials in a wide range of language learning purposes in a variety of different EFL contexts. This practical phase will include creating our own materials as well: don't worry, there will be a highly interactive and entertaining workshop that will prove to you that anyone can draw! This seminar is for students planning to teach at secondary school, Years 5 to 12/13 (YES, you CAN use pictures in the Oberstufe!)

Teilnahmevoraussetzungen, notwendige Vorkenntnisse

Important! Please note that this seminar can be taken by students planning to teach at secondary school for the module element English Language Teaching Methods, and by students planning to teach at primary school for the module element Media, Activities and Intercultural Learning.

PM1 courses should generally only be taken after most of the basic modules (BM seminars) have been completed. It is recommended in the Modulhandbuch that they are taken from the 3rd semester of study on.

Participants will be expected to contribute in various ways, such as presenting brief overviews of language teaching methods, analysing and/or creating materials and giving short presentations on their findings or creations: work will be geared to the kinds of materials they will be using at the level(s) they are planning to teach at in future.
