Die Generative Syntax ist ein wesentlicher Bestandteil der Generativen Grammatik, die insbesondere von Noam Chomsky seit den frühen 1960ern zur Erzeugung grammatischer Ausdrücke verwendet und stets weiterentwickelt wird. Ausgehend davon, dass alle Sprachen bestimmten Prinzipien und Parametern unterliegen, besteht der Grundgedanke, dass sprachliche Ausdrücke (Sätze) aus lexikalischem Material und grammatikalischen Regeln erzeugt (generiert) werden.
Die Etablierung der Theorie innerhalb der Sprachwissenschaft ist nicht von der Hand zu weisen, denn der überwiegende Teil der linguistischen Publikationen setzt ein Grundwissen über die Bestandteile und ihre Funktionen voraus.
Ziel des Seminars ist es deshalb, das notwendige Verständnis über die Kerngedanken des generativen Modells soweit kennen zu lernen, dass ein Grundverständnis zur Auseinandersetzung mit der Primärliteratur aufgebaut werden kann. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Betrachtung des Deutschen, mit seinen Besonderheiten innerhalb der Germanischen Sprachen aber auch im Vergleich zu anderen Sprachfamilien.
