230569 Landeskunde: "The Renaissance" (S) (SoSe 2007)

Contents, comment

How many social, political and cultural features can one-and-a-half centuries - from the inception of the Tudor dynasty in 1485 to the beginning of the Civil War in 1642 - possibly have in common? Many historians have disputed the usefulness of the label "English Renaissance"; yet the momentous developments and achievements of the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries in the fields of politics, religion, art, literature, philosophy, science and trade cannot be called in doubt. After a very general introduction to the period in the first session of the semester, participants will select topics for further discussion according to their interests and inclinations.
Whoever wants to do a little preliminary surfing on the Renaissance (informative but undemanding) might try
