This course is concerned with reading and analysing various examples of postcolonial African fiction in English language from the time of their emergence around 1960 until the late 20th century.

Among the novels read in class will be:

  • Chinua Achebe, Things Fall Apart (Nigeria, 1958)
  • Ngugi Wa Thiongo, Petals of Blood (Kenya, 1977)
  • Ken Saro-Wiwa, Sozaboy (Nigeria, 1985)
  • Tsitsi Dangarembga, Nervous Conditions (Zimbabwe, 1989)

3 Credit Points will be awarded for attendance (1), a group presentation (1) and an elaboration of the presentation topic in writing (1)
