230549 Lexis (S) (SoSe 2007)

Contents, comment

Class work will concentrate on increasing students' word power using S. Isaacs' ''Magic Hour,''which I strongly advise students to read before term starts (second-hand copies are available from the Amazon site). Select lexical areas will be chosen for group work, the results of which will be compiled in the form of a course dictionary.

The other major class activity will be the analysis of the Modern English vocabulary, based on A Survey of Modern English (see below for details of both books)

Place in the curriculum:
This is one of the courses in Basic Module Five and should be done only after you have done all three courses in BM One.

Credits and Requirements:
BA-students can earn three credit points for regular, active class work; doing a satisfactory project and passing the class test at the end of the semester.

Set texts:

S. Gramley and M. Pätzold, ''A Survey of Modern English.''2nd edition. London 2004

S. Isaacs, Magic Hour. New York 1991
