230770 Lenguas en contacto: Náhuatl - Español (S) (SoSe 2007)

In the course Languages in contact: Nahuatl-Spanish, we will concentrate on the different ways the speakers of these two languages, Nahuatl, a Mesoamerican language spoken in Mexico, and Spanish, a European language, mostly spoken by the Mexican population nowadays, managed to name objects, institutions, that although might have existed in a similar form before the conquest, must have acquired new signifying dimensions in the colonial period, which is from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries.

We will analyze brief texts both, written in Nahuatl and in Spanish where language contact between the two can be traced.
The bibliography for the course will be mainly in English, although there will be some articles in German and in Spanish.

En el curso de "Lenguas en contacto: náhuatl-español", revisaremos cómo los hablantes de estas dos lenguas, el náhuatl, lengua mesoamericana hablada en la actualidad en México y el español, lengua europea, hablada mayoritariamente por la población mexicana, resolvieron la necesidad de nombrar objetos, instituciones, oficios, puestos, que, aunque bien pudieran haber existido en alguna forma parecida en la época anterior a la conquista, adquirieron dimensiones de significación nuevas en la época colonial, esto es, de los siglos XVI al XVIII. Se analizarán breves textos escritos en náhuatl y en español, donde se exhiba el contacto entre las dos lenguas.
La bibliografía del curso comprenderá principalmente textos en inglés y algunos en alemán y en español.
