Gegenstand der Sprachtypologie ist die Klassifikation von Sprachen aufgrund grammatischer Eigenschaften. So lassen sich parallele morphologische und syntaktische Eigenschaften auch von Sprachen aufzeigen, die genetisch in keinem Zusammenhang stehen. Zugleich verändern sich sprachliche Merkmale im Laufe ihrer Geschichte. Sprachwandel betrifft alle Ebenen von Sprache, auch solche, die im engeren Sinne typologisch relevant sind. Der Kurs vermittelt einen Überblick über die historische Entwicklung der Sprachtypologie, ihre zentralen Arbeitsfelder sowie grundlegende Modelle des Sprachwandels. Theoretische Zusammenhänge werden durch Beispiele aus verschiedenen Sprachen der Welt veranschaulicht. Einen Schwerpunkt sollen hierbei die Sprachen Nordeuropas bilden. Ebenso wird im Verlauf des Seminars eine typologische Charakteristik der deutschen Sprache erarbeitet.
