Diese Vorlesung bietet einen Überblick über Forschung und Ergebnisse zur Genomstruktur, Annotierung von Genen, Genfamilien und Genfunktion mittels Mutantenanalyse an der Modellpflanze Arabidopsis thaliana (Ackerschmalwand). Beispielhaft werden Screeningverfahren und Mutantenanalysen vorgestellt, die zu entscheidenden wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnissen bei pflanzlichen Signalwegen geführt haben, die weit über das Modell Arabidopsis hinaus von großer Bedeutung sind. Hierzu gehören die Identifizierung von Transkriptionsfaktoren als Regulatoren bei der Embryonalentwicklung, bei der Kontrolle der Meristemtätigkeit in Spross und Wurzel sowie bei Differenzierungsprozessen. Weitere Beispiele sind Blütenbildung und -entwicklung, Ausbildung von Organpolarität und Signaltransduktionsprozesse bei der Reaktion auf Umweltreize.
