The Heart is the Capital of the Mind -
The Mind is a single State -
The Heart and the Mind together make
A single Continent -
One - is the Population -
Numerous enough -
This ecstatic Nation
Seek - it is Yourself.
This course will examine selected American poets as explorers of the Heart, the Mind and the Self. Emily Dickinson will be the central figure. To place her poetry in a broader context, we will look back to early Puritan poets like Anne Bradstreet and Edward Taylor, at her nineteenth century contemporary Walt Whitman, and at twentieth century poets including Sylvia Plath, Robert Frost and Wallace Stevens. Students will also be encouraged to read around in the works of more contemporary poets. There will be required oral presentations and several short poetry analysis papers. It will also be possible to write a term paper for those who require this option.
As preparation, students should start becoming familiar with (and enjoying) Emily Dickinson's poetry.
