Das Seminar befaßt sich mit der ältesten Epoche der deutschen Literatur (von ca. 750 bis 1050), also mit den ersten Versuchen volkssprachiger Schriftlichkeit im frühen Mittelalter. Die sprachliche Fremdheit der überlieferten Texte verlangt eine Einführung in die althochdeutsche Sprache, die mit intensiver Lektüre verbunden sein wird. Dadurch soll nicht nur Übersetzungskompetenz vermittelt, sondern auch ein Zugang zur Interpretation althochdeutscher Literatur eröffnet werden. Im Mittelpunkt stehen dabei die kleineren althochdeutschen Dichtungen (z.B. Hildebrandslied, Muspilli, Ludwigslied) sowie die ältesten magischen Texte der deutschen Literatur (z.B. Merseburger Zaubersprüche).
