Unter den soziologischen Klassikern ist Max Weber derjenige, dessen Werk am stärksten mit dem Begriff der Rationalität verbunden wird. Dafür steht vor allem der Titel der ?okzidentalen Rationalisierung? vormals traditional bestimmter Sozialordnungen. Diese Umstellung von gewohnheitsmäßigen, qua überkommenen sozialen Beziehungen geltenden Sozialordnungen auf solche, die am Leitbild von Zweck/Mittel-Beziehungen orientiert sind, gilt auch für We-bers politische Herrschaftstheorie. In der Veranstaltung sollen wesentliche Passagen aus We-bers politischen Schriften unter diesem Aspekt der Erzeugung von Rationalität erarbeitet wer-den. Abschließend soll erörtert werden, inwieweit ein auf Zweckrationalität fokussierter Beg-riff von Rationalität für komplexe politische Systeme noch Geltung beanspruchen kann.
