Auch wenn die wenigsten Studenten selbst Spitzensportler sind, so verfügen die meisten über Kenntnisse des Spitzensports, weil sie seine Ereignisse, Wettkämpfe und Protagonisten in Stadien, Hallen oder Massenmedien verfolgen. Ziel des Seminars ist es, dieses Alltagswissen vom Spitzensport um die Perspektive des soziologischen Beobachters zu erweitern. Dazu werden die wichtigsten Strukturen und Prozessdynamiken des Systems Spitzensports aufgezeigt sowie seine Beziehungen zu bestimmten Umweltbereichen, wie z.B. die Massenmedien oder das Wirtschaftssystem thematisiert. Diese überwiegend systemtheoretischen Überlegungen sind dann die Grundlage für die Analyse von Handlungsstrukturen spezifischer Rollen (Athleten, Trainer und Funktionäre) und Organisationen (Vereine und Verbände). Darüber hinaus werden zentrale Probleme des Spitzensports (Doping, Kommerzialisierung, Bosman-Urteil etc.) genauer betrachtet.
