This course replaces "EFL: Methods and Approaches" offered in WS 2003-4. If you attended "Methods and Approaches" you need not and should not attend this course. (This also applies to Dr. Sprengel's course which is a parallel course to this course.)
We will review the major methods of language teaching, focussing on the linguistic and psychological theories underlying them. We will then examine the effect these theories have had on teaching materials.
Against this background we will critically assess current methods of teaching EFL with particular reference to learner autonomy. We will also look at bilingual education programmes, in which other subjects in the curriculum are taught in English. Finally, we will address some frequently asked questions, including the treatment of error in oral work, teacher explanations of grammar and the issue of unknown vocabulary encountered in texts.
