Die Vorlesung vermittelt einen Einstieg in die Biotechnologie, indem das Spektrum biotechnischer Produkte und Verfahren präsentiert wird. Sie ist als Einführung in grundlegende technische Zusammenhänge eine Vorbereitung auf spezialisiertere Veranstaltungen gedacht.
Die Vorlesung richtet sich insbesondere an Studierende im Grundstudium des Studiengangs Molekulare Biotechnologie (1. Sem.) und des Studiengangs Naturwissenschaftliche Informatik (3. Sem.), die als 2. Hauptfach Biotechnologie wählen möchten. Darüber hinaus eignet sich die Veranstaltung für an der Biotechnologie interessierte Hörer anderer Fakultäten.
