Das Wort "Freiheit" täuscht eine Eindeutigkeit vor, die bei genauerer Erwägung nicht gegeben ist. Durch das Studium eines etwas älteren (John St. Mill) und eines etwas jüngeren (Isaiah Berlin) Klassikers der Freiheitsdiskussion sollen die unterschiedlichen Bedeutungen des Konzepts (Willens-, Handlungs-, politische Freiheit, negative vs. positive Freiheit usw.) und deren Zusammenhänge geklärt werden. Dabei soll es auch um die Fragen gehen, wie wichtig uns die Freiheit ist und mit welchen anderen Gütern sie konkurriert.
Für eine Leistungsbescheinigung (im BA-Studiengang) wird ein Portfolio erwartet. Die Anforderungen für den Erwerb eines Leistungsnachweises (im Magister- oder Lehramts-Studiengang) werden zu Beginn der Veranstaltung bekannt gegeben.

Das Buch von Mill (Über die Freiheit) gibt es günstig in einer brauchbaren Übersetzung bei Reclam. Eine Übersetzung des Textes von Berlin (Vier Versuche über die Freiheit) ist derzeit im Handel nicht verfügbar. Antiquarisch kann man es bekommen. Es werden in jedem Fall beide Texte als Kopiervorlage zu Beginn des Semester zur Verfügung stehen.
