In den Sozialwissenschaften werden in der Regel eine Vielzahl von Merkmalen bei einem Merkmalsträger erhoben. Mit Hilfe multivariater Verfahren ist es möglich, Strukturen in diesen hochdimensionalen Datensätzen zu finden. In der Veranstaltung werden eine Reihe derartiger Verfahren vorgestellt, wobei sowohl qualitative als quantitative Variablen betrachtet werden. Neben der Hauptkomponentenanalyse, Diskriminanzanalyse, Clusteranalyse und Mehrdimensionaler Skalierung werden also auch auch loglineare Modelle behandelt. Großer Wert wird dabei auf die graphische Darstellung hochdimensionaler Datensätze in niedrigdimensionalen Räumen gelegt. Im Rahmen der Klassifikation werden auch Klassifikationsbäume betrachtet. Neben der Darstellung der Theorie der Verfahren wird auch gezeigt, wie man sie mit Hilfe des statistischen Programmpaketes R analysieren kann.
