Tischtennis wurde bereits um die Jahrhundertwende (1900) in vielen Cafés gespielt und gehört auch heute noch zum festen Bestandteil von Schulhöfen, Spielplätzen, Parks, Freibädern etc.. Seinen Anreiz für breite Bevölkerungsschichten beibehaltend, hat sich Tischtennis zu einer technisch-taktisch hoch anspruchsvollen Wettkampfsportart entwickelt, die v.a. wegen der Rotation des Balles ein Höchstmass an Koordination und Konzentration verlangt. Beide Facetten des Tischtennis werden innerhalb des Kurses thematisiert: Mit der Zielsetzung, die Teilnehmer/innen des Grundkurses in die Lage zu versetzen, Tischtennis regelgerecht und taktisch angemessen zu spielen, sollen im Rahmen der eigenen Übungspraxis verschiedene Spiel-, Übungs- und Wettkampfformen des Schul-, Vereins- und Gesundheitssports zum Einsatz kommen. Von den Teilnehmern/innen wird erwartet, dass sie die Gestaltung der allgemeinen und tischtennisspezifischen Aufwärmphase übernehmen.
