Die Soziologie identifiziert Gesellschaft in der Regel mit nationaler Gesellschaft. Faktisch sind nationale Gesellschaften jedoch in einen weiteren Kontext eingebettet, der sich je nach theoretischer Perspektive als inter-nationaler (z. B. Modernisierungstheorien) oder als transnationaler Zusammenhang (z. B. Weltgesellschaftstheorien) beschreiben lässt. Anhand dieser Unterscheidung sollen im Seminar verschiedene Welt-Konzeptionen der Soziologie diskutiert und in einen historischen Zusammenhang gestellt werden. Eine weitere Leitfrage des Seminars bezieht sich auf das Verhältnis von mikro- und makrosoziologischer Theorie für die Analyse transnationaler Phänomene.
Das Seminar richtet sich auch an die Stipendiaten und Stipendiatinnen des Graduiertenkollegs "Weltbegriffe und globale Strukturmuster" und bietet ihnen die Gelegenheit, ihre theoretischen Überlegungen unter Bezugnahme auf das Seminarthema darzustellen.
