Das meiste Biomedizinische Wissen befindet sich nicht in Datenbanken und strukturierten Informationsquellen, sondern in Freitexten in Form von Fachveröffentlichungen, Büchern und Webseiten. Im Seminar werden grundlegende Textmining Techniken und Methoden vor dem Hintergrund der Wissensextraktion in der Molekularbiologie erarbeitet. Hierzu zählen relevante NLP Techniken (Natural Language Processing), mathematische Grundlagen und existierende Ressourcen wie z.B. Ontologien und Thesauri und annotierte Corpora.
Die Lehrveranstaltung unterscheidet sich insofern von anderen Seminaren, als dass anstelle von ?Reihum Vorträgen?, die Teilnehmer alle Themen gemeinsam erarbeiten. Wie das genau funktioniert, wird am Vorbesprechungstermin besprochen (siehe Aushang zu Semesterbeginn).
