Massenspektrometrie ist heutzutage eine der meistverwendeten Analysemethoden in der Proteomik. Ein Massenspektrometer ermittelt in Sekundenbruchteilen die molekularen Massen der in einer Probe enthaltenen Peptide, und dies mit sehr großer Genauigkeit: Moderne Massenspektrometer können Massen bis auf 1/10 einer Protonenmasse genau bestimmen.

Hauptanwendung der Massenspektrometrie in der Proteomik ist die Identifikation von Proteinen mittels Datenbanksuche oder de-novo Sequenzierung. In den letzten 10 Jahren wurden eine Vielzahl von biochemischen und massenspektrometrischen Protokollen entwickelt, um solche Analysen zu ermöglichen. Die zur Analyse von Massenspektren benötigten informatischen Werkzeuge wollen wir in diesem Seminar gemeinsam erarbeiten.
