Perl is a universal scripting and programming language that is used for many applications. It is easy to learn; its elementary constructs are sufficient to write powerful scripts. In this course, with no Perl programming experience required, we will learn the language "by example"; we will discuss, modify and extend Perl scripts. Most scripts will be taken from Beginning Perl for Bioinformatics by James Tisdall, http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/begperlbio/. Towards the end of the course, we will see how easily bioinformatics tasks can be accomplished using modules of the Bioperl-Project (www.bioperl.org).
