Im ersten Teil des Praktikums stehen einprägsame (auch im Schulunterricht verwendbare) Beispiele für die Wechselbeziehungen und Koevolution zwischen Insekten und Pflanzen im Mittelpunkt. Der Begriff der "ökologischen Nische" wird anhand ausgewählter Arten in Freiland und Labor ausführlich behandelt. Dabei werden auch praktische Methoden zur Erfassung einer regionalen Fauna und ihrer Populationsdynamik vorgestellt. Im zweiten Teil wird der allgemeine Bauplan der Insekten bearbeitet. Die speziellen morphologischen Anpassungen der wichtigsten Insektenordnungen werden vergleichend betrachtet, so daß eine Übersicht über die Systematik und Phylogenie der artenreichsten Tiergruppe entsteht.
