FLEISCHMANN, GLINIARS, STONES
INTRODUCTION TO ENGLISH LAW AND LEGAL ENGLISH I:
THE ENGLISH LEGAL SYSTEM
This is the first part of our four-semester certificate course. It consists of a two-hour weekly lecture given by a British lawyer, and a two-hour weekly language class. Attendance at both parts of the course is obligatory. Students who want to begin the certificate course in the winter semester 2003/4 must pass an entrance test.
The course was designed in view of the growing need for lawyers to be familiar with the legal systems of European Union member states, and to be able to communicate on a professional basis with their colleagues in these countries. It will give you an overview of the legal system of England and Wales in those areas likely to be relevant for your future professional activities; it will provide you with a working knowledge of legal English; it will help you to attain the writing and speaking skills you will need to cooperate with British lawyers and people in business.
The course is for students of law who have had approximately nine years of English at school, and who have been reading law for two to three semesters at university. We do not advise beginners to attend: much of the work consists of comparing the two systems of law (this might well be one of the main abilities that could be expected of you in your job, and it is essential to train for it); you just could not do this without having knowledge of the German legal system.

PLEASE REGISTER FOR THE COURSE IN T3-138, MARKING THE LANGUAGE COURSES ON OFFER IN ORDER OF YOUR CHOICE.
