Skeptisch schrieb Jacob Burckhardt am 5. März 1846, dass sich die revolutionäre Bewegung, die er beobachtete, “so gut wie die Französische Revolution in Gestalt eines Naturereignisses entwickeln und alles an sich ziehen (werde), was die menschliche Natur Höllisches in sich hat”. Vor dem Hintergrund kontroverser Positionen wird es in der Veranstaltung darum gehen, sich exemplarisch mit den städtischen Unruhen des Spätmittelalters, mit Bauernrevolten (1524/25), der Französischen Revolution (1789-1792), den europäischen Revolutionen (1848), der Russischen Oktoberrevolution (1917) und der deutschen Revolution (1918/19) auseinander zu setzen. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt konzentriert sich auf die amerikanische (1763-1787) und mexikanische Revolution (1910-1917). Es gilt, Zusammenhänge zwischen Krieg und Revolution, zwischen Aufklärung, Revolution und Verfassungsgebung aufzuzeigen und ebenso wichtige Strukturelemente – Menschenrechte, Volkssouveränität oder Gewaltenteilung – zu behandeln.
Die zweisemestrige Veranstaltung führt anhand dieses Themenkomplexes in geschichtswissenschaftliche Arbeitsweisen ein.
Parallel zum Grundkurs findet ein verpflichtendes Tutorium statt.
