Die Bedeutung der Freizeit und der eigenständigen Gestaltung ist für Menschen ohne Behinderung selbstverständlich und einfach. Aber auch Menschen mit schweren Behinderungen haben ein Bedürfnis nach Unterhaltung und Entspannung in ihrer arbeitsfreien Zeit. Allerdings spielen hier wichtige Faktoren bei der Umsetzung eine große Rolle - Immobilität, Betreuungsaufwand, mangelnde Ausdrucksfähigkeit und vor allem umsetzbare Angebote -. Die "Neue Schmiede" in Bethel versucht ein breites Angebot an Freizeitmöglichkeiten anzubieten und durchzuführen. Die Besonderheit dieser Freizeitangebote werden hier vorgestellt und theoretisch und praktisch ausgearbeitet. Weiterhin gibt es die Möglichkeit eigene Ideen einzubringen, zu planen und im Sommer durchzuführen
