Die Vorlesung macht mit grundlegenden Konzepten der mikro- und makroökonomischen Theorie bekannt. In der mikroökonomischen Theorie wird erklärt, wie in einem marktwirtschaftlichen Wirtschaftssystem die Abstimmung zwischen den Systemelementen erfolgt. Zentrale Elemente sind der nutzenmaximierende Haushalt als Eigentümer aller Produktionsfaktoren und die Unternehmen, die darüber entscheiden, welche Güter sie in welchem Umfang erzeugen. In der Makroökonomie wird die elementare Interaktion von Güter- und Finanzmärkten betrachtet. Untersuchungsgegenstand sind gesamtwirtschaftliche Größen wie Produktions- und Beschäftigungsniveau.
