250356 Critical theory for social justice education (S) (WiSe 2017/2018)

Contents, comment

This course trains students in critical theory to provide a foundation for researching, writing about, and enacting social justice education. We focus on critical race theory, women of colour feminism, and decolonial theory. This course centres issues of power and social transformation. We will also apply the readings to address problems of practice in the classroom. The focus of this course, however, is theoretical training. Learning about social transformation in schools requires us to enact socially just pedagogies in our course; accordingly, we will use pedagogical approaches and activities that foster a democratic environment. While the texts, discussions, and activities will be in English, this course recognizes the challenges of studying in another language and we will address issues of language accessibility.
