Das Seminar befasst sich mit den Strukturdynamiken des Spitzensports. Ausgangspunkt sind soziologische Analysen, die sich auf innersportliche und außersportliche Faktoren des Handelns im System Spitzensport beziehen. Es werden sowohl die Organisationen des Spitzensports als auch die darin handelnden Akteure untersucht. Dabei wird gefragt, auf welcher Grundlage das Handeln im System Spitzensport erfolgt, durch welchen Code es geprägt ist und mit welchen Umwelten das System interagiert (z. B. Medien, Wirtschaft).
Im Anschluss an diese grundlegenden Überlegungen wird die Bedeutung der strukturellen Bedingungen für das Handeln von Trainern, Athleten und Funktionären untersucht. Ausgehend von diesen Überlegungen werden zentrale Probleme des Spitzensports, wie z. B. Doping und Kommerzialisierung genauer betrachtet. Diese Analysen werden - soweit möglich - am Beispiel aktueller Ereignisse durchgeführt.
