Die Vorlesung soll die Grundlagen des Internationalen Privatrechts vermitteln. Als Rechtsquelle dient vor allem das EGBGB. Der Aufbau sowie die Funktionsweise von Kollisionsnormen werden ebenso erläutert wie Begriffe der "Qualifikation", "Transposition" und "Substitution". Dahinter verbergen sich spannende Fragestellungen: Wie ist etwa die "Morgengabe" (Brautgeld nach islamischem Recht) kollisionsrechtlich einzuordnen, wie soll mit einer italienischen Autohypothek verfahren werden und kann ein ausländischer Notar die Auflassung nach § 925 Abs. 1 S. 2 BGB entgegennehmen ? Erörtert wird ferner der Notanker des ordre public, der etwa Bedeutung erlangt, wenn nach amerikanischem Recht Strafschadensersatz (punitive damages) in Millionenhöhe geltend gemacht wird.
