230573 Modernism (S) (SoSe 2009)

Modernism is particularly marked by augmenting experimental techniques and an interchange of literature with other media and art-forms. The emphasis then was on complex new forms and styles, and a new idea of ‘truth’ or truthful presentation of reality emerged leading to an abandonment of the conventions of realism. Film and its innovative techniques of montage and close-up influenced writers and literary forms, as did avant-garde art. This course will look at some of the works of T.S. Eliot, Virginia Woolf, Gertrude Stein, James Joyce, and other modernist writers, pay attention to such movements as imagism and vorticism, and consider prose as well as lyrical forms.
