This is not British history for historians. The aim of this lecture-style course is to provide people who are personally and professionally interested in British society and culture today with an outline of the historical facts they need as tourists, teachers of English, readers of British magazines and newspapers, watchers of British films and tv. Where and how does history manifest itself today in cultural, social and political contexts? What do educated Brits know about British history? Which myths about their history are close to the British heart? What are the facts behind these myths? – This is British history, from Stonehenge to Winston Churchill, for anglophile non-historians.

There will be a mid-term test and an end-of-term re-sit to obtain credit.
