Im 19. Jahrhundert hat sich das literarische Universum herausgebildet, das wir heute kennen - ein von staatlichen Institutionen und Akademien losgelöstes Feld ... Anerkennung und Bestätigung ergeben sich aus den Kämpfen zwischen Autoren, Kritikern und Editoren. [aus dem Suhrkamp-Klappentext]
Bourdieu's Versuch, dieses "Feld" (neben "Habitus" und "Kapital" eine der zentralen Kategorien seiner Gesellschaftstheorie) zu bestimmen und mit soziologischen Mitteln zu analysieren, wird eingehend diskutiert. Dabei geht es zunächst darum, der Argumentation des Textes zu folgen. Überprüft werden soll in einem zweiten Schritt auch, ob diese Analyse (wie von Bourdieu intendiert) als Paradigma für Kunst generalisiert werden kann.
