230253 Introducción a los Estudios InterAmericanos: el Caribe – archipiélago de culturas / Introduction to InterAmerican Studies: The Caribbean – Archipelago of Cultures (Seminar - Studienprojekt) (BS) (WiSe 2017/2018)

InterAmerican Studies are interdisciplinary area studies, which aim to examine the American continent as a whole. The topic is plurality and American diversity. However, a singular feature of Inter-American Studies is its unique methodology, which consists in focusing specifically on interrelationships, crossings and conflicts between cultures and societies. It takes into account that not only people move (migration flows) but societies as a whole are involved in communication processes (media, informational and artistic flows) as well as in interaction processes (transnational policies). Clearly, issues of power and violence are prominent, since such entanglements are not necessarily taking place peacefully. In sum, society and culture are concepts that do not designate consolidated blocks but transformation processes.
The idea of this course is to discuss the Americas from the viewpoint of the Caribbean. The Caribbean might seem as a “prologue of the Americas”, as the encounters and dis-encounters of the European Expansion started from there. However, the challenge of thinking the Caribbean in the context of Inter-American relations certainly does not mean to consider the islands as a sort of an anteroom of something more important. On the contrary, what is at stake is to perceive the Caribbean insularity as a particular understanding of the Americas that differs from common continental visions. In this view, the Caribbean appears as an archipelago that constitutes a heterogeneous, fragmented and dispersed space. Its diversity and pluriculturality proposes the recognition of inescapable difference and particularity between its insular elements as well as its complex relatedness and processes of creolization. The thinking with the archipelago lets us envision an America without center or unity that presents itself as a plurality of differences which are in relation, communication and confrontation.
